Psalm 57

Good Morning “Comforted in Distress.”  Today we are in Psalm 57.

David wrote this Psalm, hiding from Saul in a cave.  This probably refers to the time when David was at the cave of Adullam (1 Samuel 22:1-2).

In his distress - Davis worships.  Sing with me… “Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.” Psalms‬ ‭57‬:‭5‬ ‭Sounds familiar doesn’t it?  David’s Psalm is still encouraging us today.

God responds in a most interesting, even miraculous way.  While Saul, with all of his soldiers and resources struggled to track David down, somehow a bunch of rag tag misfits easily find him.

“David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭22‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

David is stretched, distressed, and struggling, so what does God do?  God gives him people that need encouragement.  Perhaps there is application here for us.

The world around us has coined a whole host of terms which encourage us to focus on self.  Self-Care, Self-Love, Self-Help, Self-Forgiveness, Self- Actualization, etc, etc.  In fact a quick Google Search of “Self Terms”, nets no less than 50.  What’s my point?  The evil one has attempted to destroy, flip, - anything that that has to do with Gods Good Work.  While the world tells us to focus on ourself, Gods Word tells us to put others before ourselves and consider the needs of others first… (Philippians 2:3, 1 Corinthians 10:24, Romans 12:10, Galatians 5:13, Matthew 23:11-12, Matthew 20:25-27, 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, Romans 15:1-2… I could go on and on.)

In fact, Self-Focus is totally contrary to The Word of God… Practically speaking, the more one focuses on self - the lower one seems to sink.  Oh it sounds good, “You must love yourself before you can love another”,  but Satan is the master of deception.  We already love ourselves (Ephesians 5:29)!That’s the twist!  We don’t need MORE self focus! When we look to the needs of others our problems often seem to fade.  Could it be that being used by The God of all creation to love others well, actually brings with it all the “Self-Actualization” we will EVER need?  (John 15:11)

Love you all!  Dig in!
