Good Morning “Defended”. Today we are in Psalm 8.
“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.” Psalms 8:1 NIV
A Psalm of praise from David… to the point. David moves from Praise, to acknowledgment that God created it all, making man to rule over it - while marveling that God would even be mindful of man. Pretty cool! What did we do to deserve such a station… NOTHING.
But what about this passage... “Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.” Psalms 8:2
Is this passage out of place? It seems it carries a different focus than the rest. What does it even mean?
You might first review Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 1:27. Actually all of 18-31 is applicable.
Now back to our explanation of Psalm 8:2. In Matthew 21:15-16 Jesus has just cleared the temple from the money changers and healed the blind and lame. In response, the children cry out “Hosanna to The Son of David.” As the Chief Priests and Scribes hear this they are indignant. Jesus reminds them of the children’s praise in Psalm 8:2, our Psalm today.
Hosanna generally means to save or deliver. It was typically cried out as a praise or call for help “God save us”, in the context of Matthew 21:15 more appropriately “Jesus Save Us”. While the religious leaders missed it, the children GOT IT. Jesus response is to refer back to Psalm 8:2. Take another look at it. Could it be that the children in Psalm 8:2 were crying out regarding The One to come… Jesus, who will establish a stronghold against all enemies, and would silence all foes and avengers… especially the evil one?
Seems that way… How awesome is that! After the fall, God’s got a rebuke for Satan. Referring to Jesus as the Seed of the woman, God says to Satan “…He will crush your head”. Genesis 3:15 That’s a promise we can rest on.
Praise God for Jesus! Love you all! Dig in!
