Isaiah 22

Good Morning “Those Who Heed Warnings.”  Today we are in Isaiah 22.

When hail warnings go out in Eaton, you can count on neighbors bringing their cars over to the church?  Why?  They look to park their cars under our porte-cochere.  That’s a French word for large covered area we drive under, typically when unloading into the Family Activity Center.  Neighbors believe hail is coming and want to protect their vehicles.  They “heed” the warnings and move their cars to protect them.

In today’s chapter Isaiah speaks of Jerusalem’s impending judgment.  Around 100 years after Isaiah’s time it happens.  It’s horrific.  They will not be quickly decimated by the sword - they will starve.  Jeremiah describes the depth of Gods judgment and the severity of Jerusalem’s suffering in Lamentations 4:9-12.

Now before we jump to accuse God of being overly harsh, even with His own people, consider the fact that He first sent them warning after warning, through Prophets.  Israel ignored them (2 Chronicles 36:15-17).  They did NOT heed any warnings.  Even in the midst of judgment they did not look to Him, but to human strength.

“The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah, and you looked in that day to the weapons in the Palace of the Forest.” Isaiah‬ ‭22‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬. Even in judgment they look to the kings armies for protection and salvation rather than The One who established it ALL vs 11.

This judgment is significant because it begins the “Time of the Gentiles”, and it will continue until The End - when Israel turns back to God (Romans 11:11-13, Romans 11:25-27).  Turn back she will, through The One to come.

Side note: Isaiah hints of, or rather sets the stage for Jesus as he speaks about Eliakim.  Eliakim will replace Judahs leader Shebna as he is judged for his arrogant role in Judahs rebellion.  The language used when describing Eliakim (vs 21-23) is interesting as it is later used to describe Jesus (Revelation3:7).  Read on though… Eliakim is insufficient (vs 24-25).  Unlike Jesus who is ALL Sufficient (2 Corinthians 3:5).

As we study Jerusalem’s judgment I can’t help but wonder… how do we respond to God’s clear warnings regarding our own rebellion, both on a personal level, and national level?  Do we heed the warnings we see?  I 100% believe they are there (Luke 12:35-59)

Love you all!  Dig in!
