Psalm 60

Good Morning “No Cakewalkers.”  Today we are in Psalm 60.

Today’s Psalm of David was meant to be taught and thus learned from.  The Levites would teach this Psalm to the people that they might better understand and live for The Lord.  But understand what? Let’s review a bit to understand the circumstances of this Psalm.

Opposition remains due to Saul’s ruthless pursuit of David.  From 2 Samuel 7, David has just taken the throne and suggested he build God a Temple.   God responds through Nathan the Prophet by reminding David that He (God) was the One that ALWAYS carried Israel, that He was the ONE ALWAYS with David in His victories.  He never asked for a building.  He promises David He will continue to care for Israel and that David’s son Solomon would be the one to build the temple.  Through David though…  He is going to build a Kingdom that will stand Remember Jesus is coming… through the line of David.  Ultimately God will build His Kingdom through Jesus, the line of David - and Jesus (Son of David) will reign on the throne forever.

God has just made some pretty heavy promises to David.  “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”2 Samuel‬ ‭7‬:‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬.  I wonder how much David fully understood?

Having heard these promises David must have been perplexed as he began to wage war, and the victory didn’t come easy.  The war account David sings about in this Psalm is found in 2 Samuel 8. God indeed gave the victory, but through Psalm 60 we come to understand that it didn’t come as easily as it seems on the surface.  At least it didn’t start that way.

So… what are the Levites to teach from this Psalm?  What were they, and are we - meant to learn?  A few suggestions:

- Just because God has commanded it, and He is in it - doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy (John 16:33).  We are strengthened and matured through battle (James 1:2-4).

- Gods Glory is magnified in the victory - when we come to understand the REAL intensity of the war we are in.  The realization that we CANNOT be victorious on our own is more realized - when God allows us to struggle.  (Think in terms of our battle with sin)

- God is ALWAYS active.  We ought always acknowledge Him, in both the good and bad (Proverbs 3:5-7); for He works in and through it all. Lessons are to be learned in both.
