Psalm 73

Good Morning “Content.” Today we are in Psalm 73.

This Psalm marks the beginning of Book III.  What’s the significance of the 5 books of Psalms?  They do not seem to be in a particular order, chronologically anyway.  They clearly are not divided by author.  Psalms is broken into 5 Books, likely aligning with the 5 Books of The Torah, Genesis - Deuteronomy.

A Psalm of Asaph.  Reminder… Asaph was a prominent Levite, appointed by David - to lead worship.  He would have observed daily temple worship and practices, seeing people come and go in worship.  His whole life was serving - he was a servant of the Lord.

Here we see Asaph confessing that he almost let envy get ahold of him.  He observes the prosperity of the wicked: their lack of ailments, they seem healthy, with no cares in the world.  Their pride exudes from them.  Their hearts are hard toward their sin, even as they plot violence and oppression.  Through it all they draw in the masses.  People follow them.  In their arrogance they even claim heaven as theirs…

Asaph knew better.  He knew The Lord would one day set it all “right”.  He knew that God was aware even if He was silent.  Though they were prosperous, he knew there would come a day of reckoning for them and it would all be gone.

A few weeks back we looked similarly at this principle… I asked the question, why does God let the wicked prosper when it appears the righteous struggle so?  Do you remember the answer?

Because the world’s wealth is empty!  It’s meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:2).  The truly “Good Stuff”, can only be attained by fully submitting, remaining in Him and serving Him (John 15:1-11).  Everything else is temporary, empty and fruitless (Matthew 6:19-21).  He loves you too much to see you engulfed in “that world”.

Asaph knew this in the depth of his heart!  It’s what kept him from slipping.  “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭73‬:‭26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Love you all!  Dig in!  Hang on to Truth!
