Good Morning “Dragon Slayers.” Today we are in Job 41.
As God continues, passionately placing Job back into his more appropriate place of fearful, humble submission… He uses the Leviathan as an example.
“Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?”
Job 41:1-3 NIV
Lest you begin to think the Leviathan is simply a fish of some sort, sweet little Nemo perhaps - read on. This is an armor plated, fire breathing monster without fear and with no match on earth. A dinosaur? Sure… depending on your definition of such. If you’ve read this chapter you no doubt have come to the conclusion… this thing is a dragon. What??? I thought dragons were simply mythical creatures?
Hmmm, well, consider the original word that comes into our language as Leviathan.
Original Word: לִוְיָתָן
Pronunciation: li-vee-yah-tahn
Phonetic Spelling: (liv-yaw-thawn')
Definition: Leviathan
Meaning: a wreathed animal, a serpent, dragon, Babylon
In any case, God makes it clear that Job is no match. His questioning is rhetorical. Gods control over such a creature is implied, and serves to remind Job just how POWERFUL He is and how out of line Job is to question Him.
Why would we ever attempt to stand in opposition to God? Bad idea! Rather with Him, and His Holy Spirit in us All things are possible. Through Jesus even entering the Kingdom of Heaven is possible. Speaking of just that -
“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””
Matthew 19:26 NIV
Love you all! Dig in!
