Psalm 79

Good Morning “Objects of Jealousy.”  Today we are in Psalm 79.

Another Psalm of Asaph.  This one too appears to be referring to the time in Israel’s history when God used Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian army to conquer and take Judah captive.  They knew better.  They had turned away from God - in His jealousy He would turn them back.  “How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭79‬:‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

A couple points to draw out of this Psalm.

Doesn’t 1 Corinthians 13:4 say Love is not jealous (or does not envy). Truly the word zéloó used there means to desire deeply to be jealous.  Think of it like this, if I envy someone else’s wife or if I get jealous simply because someone talks to mine, that is not love.  And yes, that would be sinful.  No that is not Godly.  But, what loving husband would not be wrecked with
jealousy to find his wife in the arms of another?  That is logical, justifiable jealousy.  That kind of jealousy is what we see from God - here for His people.  It’s His jealousy for us when we choose to push Him aside for the world’s offerings.

His response throughout Scripture is to use any means necessary to turn His true love back to Him.  Remember He holds it all!  It’s not beyond His ability to use even evil rulers to accomplish His purpose.  He even calls Nebuchadnezzar His servant… “And now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant;…” Jeremiah 27:6.

Note Asaph’s plea in this Psalm.  Essentially, Lord pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, but Lord, be merciful on us, deliver us and forgive our sins (Psalm 79:6-9).  Let’s not forget why this is happening to them in the first place (Jeremiah 27, 2 Chronicles 36:14-21).

Careful… pot calling the kettle black.  People in glass houses throwing stones… however you want to look at it.  We’ve all got logs in our own eyes of some sort.  We’ve ought get those out so we can see more clearly to help our brother with the spec in his eye (Matthew 7:3-5).

Love you all!  Dig in!
