Good Morning “Refuge Seekers”. Today we are in Psalm 46.
This Psalm like 10 others, is specifically attributed to the “Sons of Korah.”
Rabbit trail… Who are these sons?
You may remember Numbers 16 when Korah rallied 250 others to rebel against Moses and Aaron. They were Kohathites, from the tribe of Levi. They were given the role of taking care of the Holy Things of the Temple - the Arc etc. They wanted to be Priests, not content in their role. They rebelled and ultimately God opened the ground and swallowed them and the 250.
These Sons of Korah are descendants who WERE content to serve faithfully. Not only were they preserved but obviously involved in Temple Worship
There is something else interesting about this Psalm - and it occurs before we even get into it. Check out the title. “For the Director of Music. Of The Sons of Korah. According to alamoth. A song.”
Ok, I know all those words except alamoth. What’s alamoth?
Hebrew Definition: Maidens, young women
Meaning: girls, the soprano, female voice, falsetto
This Psalm was written for a choir of young female voices. In a sense for a girls choir.
Wait what? I thought Old Testament Jewish Worship in Israel was solely male in nature. The men worshiped, were taught, and then in turn taught their families. That’s the predominate witness of Scripture, but obviously not exclusive. Here, the spotlight is on these young ladies. Super cool!
What exactly did the hearts of The Sons of Korah proclaim, what were these girls singing about? What were they doing with their moment of glory? Pointing to The Father… what else? In a most dramatic way even!
“Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalms 46:2-3 NIV
Even if the earth itself is destroyed… THEY WILL NOT FEAR! They KNOW God! They know He is their “…refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalms 46:1 NIV
NO reason for us to get twisted up! Let’s learn from their song! Love you all! Dig in!
