Good Morning “Stuff Rejectors.” Today we are in Isaiah 23.
Tyre is an ancient Phoenician city on the coast of the Med. Today it’s part of southern coast of Lebanon. It’s a city that began on the mainland but later moved to an off shore island about a half mile
away. It was a heavily protected and fortified city. Tyre was a seaport of worldwide importance in its day. It was the principle seaport for shops traveling between Palestine and the western world.
So what’s the problem? She was able to produce great wealth and in fact that wealth and its influence on Israel became the reason for her judgment. God through Isaiah refers to Tyre as a prostitute plying her trade. People want lots of stuff! Tyre was able to supply it. The how to get stuff, and how to supply usually becomes of secondary concern. “I want it and will do whatever it takes to get it.” Stuff became their god and she would be judged for it. Through that Israel would be reminded God owns it ALL!
Similar to Israel’s own Babylonian captivity - Tyre would be conquered and judged for 70 years. At the end of the 70 years she would once again be allowed to sell and amass great wealth. Why? God would eventually use the great industry of Tyre to provide the materials and means to build the Temple (Ezra 3:1-7). Sound familiar? Kind of sounds like the way God used the wealth of Egypt to provide all that Israel needed to build the mobile Tabernacle.
God not only owns it ALL, He gives and He takes away as He sees fit to accomplish His plan. He is to be worshipped and pursued… not the stuff. We can easily get caught up in accumulating. The danger is real! Revelation speaks of the world’s sin in pursuit of material things (Revelation 18:3).
Store up treasures in heaven not on earth… check out Matthew 6:19-20.
Love you all! Dig in!
