Good Morning “Mocked for Righteousness”. Today we begin Psalms with Ch 1.
The books of Psalms is a collection of what were once only song lyrics. Like many songs, they chronicle what the writer was going through at the time, or rejoice in what has come. Psalms chronicles Israel’s history from the Kings to their exile, Gods faithfulness in returning and restoring them and on to celebration and praise. Gods faithfulness is on full display and to be celebrated. The Psalms of David dominate Psalms 1 and 2.
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalms 1:1-3 NIV
Pretty simple but let’s break it down a bit. Walking in step with the wicked is obvious… you are blessed if you don’t do what the wicked do - simple. But check it out: “or stand in the way that sinners take”. We don’t do what they do, nor do we even position ourselves to be able to do it. It’s not only about resisting the temptation to sin, but about not putting yourself in the position that leads to temptation. “Last time I went to bar I drank too much.” Solution… don’t go to the bar (Romans 14:20-21).
1 Corinthians 15:33 makes it clear that “Bad company corrupts…” but here we see warning of even being in corruptible places. You may be mocked for such a choice… no matter, you’re blessed if you simply don’t remain in the mockers presence.
Instead of delighting in the sins of the world… we simply delight in The Word of God. It feeds our soul like the water feeds the tree, and produces fruit. We don’t need all the other junk. The wicked are drawn in by it, then blown away like chaff.
“For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.”
Psalms 1:6 NIV
