Good Morning “Confessors”. Today we are in Psalm 72
“Of Solomon.” It is debated as to whether this was written by Solomon as the heading states, or by David as may be interpreted by the closing verse. How about yes? It’s both. The headings we see in Psalms appear in the original Hebrew so we must take them at face value. Hence let the debaters be silent. This is a Psalm written by Solomon - referring to prayers of his father David.
Either way the Psalmist offers prayers for The King. Sure this Psalm should serve as a reminder for us to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2), but there is way more here - than simply a prayer outline for earthly leaders.
“This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.” Psalms 72:20 NIV
What prayers was Solomon referring to? David offered up lots of prayers all throughout the Psalms. THESE prayers appear to be referring to The Son of David… not David’s earthly son. Perhaps a review of 2 Samuel 7 will jog our memories. Pay close attention to The Psalmists (Solomon’s) words. He is making it abundantly clear that David’s prayer is ONLY answered in Messiah and not Solomon or any other fleshly heir.
Solomon was wise, and became quite powerful, but even he would not reign forever. It is not reasonable to suggest ALL the kings of the earth bow before him, or that he would have dominion even over the sea. “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.” Psalms 72:8 NKJV
No way could Solomon or any other earthly king save souls. “He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy.”
Psalms 72:13 NKJV
Jesus was coming! David knew Gods promises, and he knew he played a role. This One to come will be The Light of the world (John 8:23). He will not rely on the light from the sun or moon (Revelation 21:22-26).
He will humble the proud, bring perfect justice to the oppressor, and rescue the poor and oppressed (Matthew 5:3-9)
David knew He was coming - now He has come! His name is Jesus, and every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11). The question is when - this side of eternity or that? Hint… if the first time we confess Him as our Lord is when we stand before Him… it’s too late.
Love you all! Dig in! Don’t wait!
