Psalm 55

Good Morning “Trusting God Even in the Midst of Trials / Discipline.”  Today we are in Psalm 55.

David is beside himself.  His thoughts are driving him nuts.  His fears causing him to tremble.  What could cause this mighty warrior who slayed Goliath when he was just a youth to tremble so?

Most commentators argue David penned this Psalm in response to the turning of his son Absalom against him - and the subsequent betrayal of his right hand man Ahithophel.  Perhaps Davids trembling was in response to the judgement God had promised in 2 Samuel 12:7-15.  He knew the ultimate end.  Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a parent more than concern for one of their children.

For background on the story, and to compare it to this Psalm, review 2 Samuel 16:15-23, 2 Samuel 17, and 2 Samuel 18:1-18.  Keep reading 18 to see David’s response to Absaloms death. Perhaps in Davids mind Absalom was never included as an enemy.  He was nearly destroyed watching Absalom fall.  Even though Absalom pursued David, and rallied the people against him, David kept his son in a different category from his enemies.

This story somewhat parallels Jesus’ story.  Jesus too was betrayed by one close to Him, Judas.  He was denied by Peter, He was beaten beyond human recognition (Isaiah 52:14), separated from the Father and The Spirit (Matthew 27:46), yet He considered His only enemy Satan (Ephesians 6:12).  He shuttered at the thought of the fall of those He loved and went to The Cross for.  While hanging He prayed for forgiveness for those who nailed Him to The Cross “…Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”…Luke‬ ‭23‬:‭34‬ ‭NIV‬‬

That’s you and me guys!  Our sin put Him there as much as those that drove the nails.  David’s horror was judgment for His sin, Jesus horror was judgment for ours…

Both Trusted God and rested in Him despite their turmoil (Psalm 55:22-, Luke 22:42).

Do we trust Him?  Really?  Even in the midst of trial?  Even if the trial is not simply testing, or preparing but discipline?  (Hebrews 12:7-11, James 1:2-4)

You certainly can!  He’s perfect in all He does!

Love you all!  Dig in!
