Good Morning “Avoiders or Discipline”. Today we are in Psalm 74.
This Psalm appears to be talking about the destruction of the Temple
In Jerusalem by the Babylonians. If this is the case then Asaph is either speaking prophetically or this is a different Asaph than David’s Asaph. Both entirely possible, as the Levite singers became known as “sons of Asaph”, (Ezra 2:41, Nehemiah 11:22)
If we are indeed talking about the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians, then Israel, more specifically Judah, brought the destruction on themselves. Both 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles records Judahs history and how God brought discipline on His people through the Babylonians (2 Kings 25:8-10).
The people of Judah rebelled against God and found themselves conquered by Babylon. They were helpless so they eventually cried out for a savior.
Even in their conquering God displayed Grace. Asaph was wrong, there was a Prophet of God, they just weren’t listening to him. Check out Jeremiah 29:10-14.
The situation of the people of Judah was not unlike our own situation. We are helpless to save ourselves from our sin and its consequences. Only a Savior can do that, but like Judah we have to reach the point where we give up trying on our own and call out for a Savior.
By His grace, He has already provided us with One. “The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:23.
Every good and loving Father disciplines (Hebrews 12:6-11). Don’t despise it or curse God for it, instead, stay away from sin that there might not be a need for it.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 NIV
Love you all! Dig in!
