Good Morning “Blameless”. Today we are in Psalm 26.
“Vindicate me, Lord, for I have led a blameless life;” Psalms 26:1a
Hang on, hang on… what is David saying? We know he was not sinless but in fact guilty of horrific sin. So what’s he mean blameless? We get a clue in the 2nd part of verse one: “I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.” Psalm 26:1b
He continues: “Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.” Psalms 26:2-3 NIV
David’s plea for vindication is based on his faithfulness not any claimed perfection. He knows he’s horribly sinful… in fact he states that fact without stating it:
“Do not take away my soul along with sinners, my life with those who are bloodthirsty,”
Psalms 26:9 NIV.
“I lead a blameless life; deliver me and be merciful to me.”
Psalms 26:11 NIV
Did you catch that? Why would he plead for God NOT to take away his soul if he believed himself sinless? Why would he need Gods mercy? His argument is that even in his stumbling horribly, he remained faithful and reliant on God for his justification. In that manner he has remained “blameless”. It’s for that reason God can refer to David as “…a man after His own heart…” 1 Samuel 13:14
This Psalm once again heralds Salvation by Grace alone - from a Savior that does all the work. It is not of ourselves - we cannot boast (Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5). “The man after Gods own heart” was humbly broken, and fully reliant on God. We ought be the same.
Love you all! Dig in!
