Good Morning “Recipients of Mercy, and ALL That Means.” Today we are in Psalm 25.
David rejoices in the Mercy and Love of God… but what exactly does that mean?
We often define Gods Mercy as Him withholding judgment we deserve. Truly we’ve received Jesus payment on The Cross - His shed blood covers our sin (Ephesians 2:4-5). Through Jesus there is no longer “condemnation” (Romans 8:1), but that doesn’t mean there is not still a lesson to be learned. His Mercy is perfectly complete. True Mercy understands there is a better way that MUST still be learned or there is no Love. Love doesn’t allow one to continue on a destructive path.
Read carefully David’s words:
“Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” Psalms 25:8-9 NIV
Definitely The Word of God taught by The Spirit of God convicts and teaches us His Way. But it seems like David is referring to something more. It seems like David is referring even to God guiding along, as in - walking along to teach.
Remember David sin… despite his sincere repentance, he has been subjected to the consequences of his sin. God took the son created by His sin with Bathsheba. (2 Samuel 12:15-17). His household fell apart and ultimately he was hunted by his own son Absalom (2 Samuel 15). Those consequences were orchestrated by God, triggered by David earlier (2 Samuel 12:10).
What’s my point? Gods Mercy through Jesus saved us from eternal condemnation, but in His Love He must still correct (Hebrews 12:5-11). “He guides the humble…”, David said. Humility is key. Without it there is no “guidance”. Without humility we’re not teachable, can’t be taught - don’t learn from our mistakes but instead we repeat them.
In Romans 12:1 Paul says in view of Gods Mercy, our response ought to be to offer ourselves as living sacrifices - Holy, pure and pleasing to Him. Kind of sounds like what we just read in Hebrews 12:10-11.
Understand complete Loving Mercy also includes discipline and instruction - there is a much better Way.
Love you all! Dig in!
