Good Morning… “God is Good… “ finish the sentence…
“All the time…”
Today we are in Job 34
Elihu continues rebuking and imparting wisdom to Job, his friends… and us. He’s young, but has a good grasp of Gods Sovereignty, and His Perfect Goodness displayed in His Justice.
We’ve talked much recently about our inclination to sit in judgment over God. I’m not suggesting that any of us consciously elevate ourselves to this position. What I am suggesting is that we have become a people that tend to define what is “good” based on our comfort. Our culture and our flesh have convinced us that things like good health, protection from harm, peace, and lots of shiny things are good things. We arrogantly think we get to define what is “good” and what is “bad”. Worse, we try to squeeze God into our box as administrator of both… but on our terms.
It may never be audible, but don’t we think that way? Consider this… we witness or experience the death of someone young - too young to die. Did you catch it? Even that statement - “Too young to die”… according to who? God numbers our days doesn’t He? (Psalm 139:16) Apparently they are NOT too young according to God, in fact they are just the right age.
If we’re honest, that kind of thinking messes with our categories so we refuse it… that’s a problem. When we witness anything other than the “good” we’ve defined, without even thinking, we utter “It isn’t fair.” We think and may even say… “How could God…”. In that moment we have elevated ourselves over Him… judging what is “good” and because He is the One in control - questioning His “Goodness”.
Elihu addresses this while also illustrating Gods Sovereign control of it ALL:
“…Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice. Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole world? If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, all humanity would perish together and mankind would return to the dust.” Job 34:10, 12-15 NIV
““His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step. There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.” Job 34:21-22 NIV
“But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over individual and nation alike,”
Job 34:29 NIV
God is Good - ALL the time! ALL the time - God is Good! Rest in that, and chalk up the rest to lack of understanding. For He is God, all the time; and, all the time, He is God! We’re NOT! And… that’s ok. It’s ok not to always fully understand.
Love you all! Dig in!
