Romans 2

Good Morning passengers in this boat together.  Check out Romans 2.

Bible publishers broke the Bible into chapters - the writers didn’t.  Paul’s letter to the Romans was continuous.  At the end of Romans 1 we read this, “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭32‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Then Paul continues “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.” Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

What’s Paul referring to?  What things?  He’s referring to the list of sins that define the Romans at the time.  It has been said this list defines us well.  Right after noting that they had begun to worship created things rather than the creator, he gives them over to lust condemning any and all sexual sin.  That is, any and all sexual sin outside of Gods design for marriage.  But then, check out what’s next on the list, “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭29‬-‭31‬ ‭NIV‬‬

It’s easy to read through a chapter like this and think… that’s not me, I’m in the clear.  But… envy, gossips, slanderers, arrogant, boastful, disobey parents… what???  Yeah, these things too are markers of our depravity.  We not only see an increase in these kinds of sins as well, but now a justification of them.

“You can see why they are upset… no wonder they’re rioting.”

“Well of course he’s going to disobey his parents, they’re unreasonable.”

“Did you hear what she did?  I’m just telling you so you can pray for her.”

Glorification of sin in nearly every form has become prime time television, and viral social media.

So what’s Paul’s point?  Keep our mouths shut?  Live and let live?  I don’t believe that’s it since he’s just given a stern warning about giving hearty approval to sin.  I believe he’s charging them to clean up their own house.  Look in the mirror.  Let the Holy Spirit change you from the inside out.  The way of the world NEVER trumps the way of God even if EVERYONE gives approval to it!

Love you all!  Dig in!
