Good Morning Benefactors of His Mercy and Grace. Check out John 18
In chapter 18 John covers the arrest of Jesus in the garden and the beginning of His bogus trial.
Jesus knew His time had come (John 17:1). He has just finished praying to the Father (end of 17) Jesus who was wrecked, in so much anguish His sweat fell “like” drops of blood, (or He sweat blood, whichever you subscribe to) now willingly turns Himself over to the mob who has come to arrest Him. Willingly you say? How do we know?
One piece of evidence comes when Peter steps forward and cuts off Malchus’ ear. Matthew records Jesus saying “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” Matthew 26:53. As awesome as that sounds, it seems to speak to The Fathers power - not Jesus’.
But wait, check out this very interesting detail that only John records:
“Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.”
John 18:4-6
Did you catch it? “”When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.””
Something happened in that moment! With His Jesus power He literally, with only 3 words, “I am He” leveled them! Why? Why do that, then submit to their arrest? Maybe He had a momentary lapse of judgment and was going to resist - so He flexed His Jesus muscles? I don’t think so. I believe one possibility is that, He simply wanted to make it clear to the mob, His Disciples, and us - that He submitted willingly.
He gave up His life for ours willingly! They had zero power over Him to do anything they did. If He leveled them there, He could have done it anytime during the trial, the beating, the crucifixion! No… they didn’t take His life, He gave it! He gave it that you and I might have life - don’t miss that!
Love you all! Dig in!
