Good Morning “Christians”. Today we are in Numbers 6.
The Levites were a special level of committed and God wanted to make sure they looked that way. But, truly the Israelite nation as a whole was expected to look different. Given the last verse of this chapter I’d like to revisit that.
““So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.””
Numbers 6:27 NIV
The Israelites were to bear the very name of God. Consider the 3rd commandment for a moment.
““You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
Exodus 20:7 ESV
Although foul language is never glorifying to God especially when it includes His name… consider this… The phrase translated “do not take”, comes from the original Hebrew word ṯiś·śā. It literally means carry. Do not carry the Lords name in vain. The 3rd commandment seems to recognize His children bear His name and we should not do it in vain. We should not waste it or squander it.
Apply this same thinking now to us. John 1:12 - When we believe we are given the right to become Children of God. Hence we take His name, like any adoption. We become Christ-ians. What an honor! We have taken His name - as we “carry” it, we surely ought not squander it.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.””
Numbers 6:24-27 ESV
