Good Morning “Living With God as The Center.” Today we are in Numbers 2.
In this chapter, God through Moses gives instruction as to how the camp of the Israelites was to be arranged. Each family in its specific place under its banner. Some believe these banners more likely bore images representative of the Tribe rather than the name of the Tribe. For instance Judas’ banner may have had a lion on it. What image would be on your families banner?
This would be the arrangement each time the nation camped. It would also be the order in which they would “set out”, when it was time to move. If you were to take time as you are reading to sketch out all of the positions you would soon discover the Tabernacle, the place where The Lord met with His people, is always at the center. Appropriately surrounding it are the Levites (the Priests), then the Tribes (families) of Israel arranged as described around them.
They camped, maintained and it appears they moved not in a single file line but more like a cell, with the Tabernacle” in the center.
God appeared to them in a Cloud of Smoke, a Pillar of Fire - a Theophany (Manifestation of God).
“On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped.”
Numbers 9:15, 17 NIV
When they were encamped, the Tabernacle, the place where they met with God - was at the center. They didn’t move until He moved and led them.
“By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.” Exodus 13:21-22 NIV
What’s this got to do with us? EVERYTHING!!! There is much we can learn from this arrangement. God was literally the CENTER of their world! They did not move unless He moved and led them.
He also ought to be the CENTER of our lives, our marriages, our families, our work, our hobbies… EVERYTHING! We should be led in EVERYTHING - by Him! We no longer follow a manifestation of God, we follow His Spirit who dwells in the hearts of believers. Check out Galatians 5:13-
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:25 NIV
Love you all! Dig in! Keep Him The Center of EVERYTHING!
