Good Morning “Recognizers That Gods Got it All Covered.” Today we are in Leviticus 25.
Remember when I said that The Law was given for multiple reasons. One of those purposes was to protect or steward the land, and another to protect against injustice. Those are both on display in this chapter.
The Sabbath year gave the land a chance to recover. As previously discussed, due to modern fertilizing methods few farmers still practice the Sabbath year with their fields… but some do. Crop rotation is another means of giving the land a break. The idea came from God. He thought of everything… funny how that is.
The nation of Israel was to be 100% dependent on God. He would provide for all of their needs both supernaturally and through each other - the community. If they recognized it all came from Him, then sharing with their neighbor would not be a problem.
When a fellow Hebrew found themselves poor and in need they could sell themselves to their neighbor for a limited time. In that way it was possible for them to “get back on their feet.” Consider Jacob who sold himself to Laban for the bride price, twice. He left a wealthy man. Better to go to work for your neighbor than for your family to starve to death. Think of it like financing today. You would sell yourself to your neighbor, pay off your debts immediately, then work it off over time. During the year of Jubilee everyone got a restart.
Laziness was not tolerated and would be considered an intentional sin, thus abusing the system was minimized.
Gods STILL got it all covered! He still provides for our needs both supernaturally and through the community of believers. (Matthew 6). He still expects us to help when and where we can as He leads. We are simply a conduit, a flow through. He blesses us so we can bless others.
“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Proverbs 11:24-25 NIV
Gods Got it All! It’s all His! Love you all! Dig in!
