Leviticus 12

Good Morning “Born Sinful.”  Today we are in Leviticus 12.

At first glance this passage may seem unfair.  Why would woman be deemed unclean and expected to bring both a burnt offering and a sin offering simply because she gave birth - a natural process.

To understand we have to go back to Genesis 3:16 when woman’s penalty for the Garden Sin was pronounced.  In pain she would now give birth.  Blood is typically associated with pain hence one aspect of the uncleanliness.  However there’s more… Psalm 51:5 says “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭51‬:‭5‬ NIV.  Romans 5:12-14,  reminds us that the first sin is credited to Adam.  From that time forward we all receive a sin nature from our father - but the sinful creature comes forth through momma.

It’s the mother who, although she may be clean immediately prior to birth is exposed to the unclean, sinful creature during the birth process.  Anyone who touched anything unclean must go through purification - Hence she must offer atonement for her uncleanness.  How is an innocent little newborn considered sinful?  It’s in us from birth.  Sin is our natural default.

“Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭58‬:‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Because of this inherited sin nature, the woman had to make atonement to temporarily cover the sin.  Jesus became that once and for all sacrifice, but without receiving His payment, our sin remains on us!   We desperately need a savior, both to release us from the bonds of sin here on earth and to change our default destination.  Because of our sin, our default is hell.  God doesn’t have to send us there, we’re already going.

Our world seems to believe it’s a matter of more good than bad - but Scripture reminds us there is no good in us apart from Jesus.  Rom 3:10. The best we have to offer is filthy rags.  Isaiah 64:6. It’s only by His Grace we can be saved Eph 2:8-10.

Love you all!  Dig in!
