Exodus 21

Good Morning “Thankful We Have Laws.”  Today we are in Exodus 21.  The giving of the Law continues.

Have you ever wondered where our Laws originated?  It may surprise you to learn that most came from Scripture - at least in their infancy.  Contrary to most modern teaching, our Nation was founded under God by men who worshiped The Lord and recognized that even our Constitution and Bill of Rights is inadequate apart from a people who fear God and follow His commands.

As you read through these Laws, its important to have some clarification:

- Gods giving of Laws to govern the affairs of man is never to be misconstrued as His approval of the particular practice it addresses.  It’s simply a recognition of the condition of man and His movement for man to act fairly within it.  For instance He never condones having multiple wives yet recognizes in their sin, men take multiple wives.  He gives Laws regarding marriage to protect each wife and the children.

- Slavery wasn’t always what we know it to be today.  As a result of sinful man’s depravity it’s changed.  It’s important to note that in this day, Hebrew slaves typically put themselves up for sale as a means of paying off a debt.  Remember Jacob’s family before Joseph?  In typical society no one was captured and sold.  There was a time limit - 7 years. The laws given in regards to slaves, wives etc, were given to primarily protect the women and children.  Remember, a woman is never out from under the protection of a man. God desires her needs be met continually.  These laws were all clearly understood before hand, so any slave who married while still a slave knew ahead of time the decision they were making.  A bride price was always paid one way or another.

- As you get to verses 22 - 25 we see Gods heart for the unborn.  Made in His image, considered to be such from the time of conception, Gods laws concerning the unborn child carry no minimum age.  Only sinful man has tried to define the age at which the child is considered a child.  Gods Word is clear - life begins at conception.

In the world in which we live it’s important we are clear on Gods Word, and His Ways - in regards to all we see around us.  The expectation is that we live accordingly - and consequences follow when we don’t.  We want His heart.  Reach out with questions if you need, I promise to get you an answer.

Love you all!  Dig in!
