Good Morning “Those Who Hold No Grudge.” Today we finish the Book of Genesis with chapter 50.
Jacob is dead, and Joseph has promised to bury him in the promised land with their ancestors. Joseph knows the journey is long so he orders physicians to embalm him. It’s interesting to note here that embalming was typically done by Egyptian Priests, but Joseph, demonstrating further obedience to God; once again defies the norm of his new culture and orders physicians to do it. Likely this is to stay away from any pagan rituals that the priests would have carried out during.
Joseph further demonstrates obedience to Gods Word and trust in Gods Plan by asking Pharaoh’s permission to go and bury his father, then promising to return. A generation has passed, the famine is over, why not just return to the promised land and settle there? The answer lies in Gods Word to Abraham. When God revealed His Plan it came with a timeline . 4 generations would dwell in the land of Egypt. Only one generation had passed. Joseph is so committed to the Word of God that he promises to return, knowing it meant slavery and oppression for 3 more generations rather than live in the land God promised they would one day have. The circumstance that the famine was over didn’t matter! Talk about staying the course regardless of worldly circumstances.
With Jacob dead, Joseph’s brothers are scared. Scared to slavery to be specific. They are so afraid Joseph will now get his revenge that they fall before him and offer themselves as his slaves. Joseph demonstrates incredible faith by explaining that God had a plan all along. “…Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” Genesis 50:19-20 NIV
The chapter closes with Joseph reminding his brothers that God WILL carry them from Egypt, and makes them promise to carry him out with them - back to the land God had promised.
God has a sovereign plan and we are all part of it. Even as others do things to harm us, God is working! Why harbor un-forgiveness and resentment? God is working even through the worst.
Love you all! Dig in!
