Good Morning “You With Eyes Toward Heaven.” Today we are in Genesis 19.
In 18 we saw Abraham pleading with God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah. What Abraham truly wanted was God to spare Lot. God does not spare the incredibly debauched cities but He does spare Lot. Here, we now see the purpose of the two angels that appeared with God before Abraham. They appear to be on the scene in part at least to drag Lot and his family out of the city. Warning - the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is graphic. The disgustingness of the story shines new light on just how bad things can get, and the dangers of living in the midst.
The consequences of Lot choosing to live in the midst of such debauchery are huge. We know somehow in the midst of it all Lots heart must have still been for the Lord because Scripture refers to Lot as a righteous man. We really don’t get to see much of it though - at least not through Lots fruit thus far. What we do see is Gods Grace in Lot. “and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.”
2 Peter 2:7-9 NIV
Lot may have been righteous through his belief in Gods promises, but he was most definitely corrupted by his desire for the world. He becomes a poster child for the worldly saint. His choice ultimately affects his entire family. Lots choice to live in Sodom results in his own twisted thinking, the loss of his wife who couldn’t bare to leave her city, and is fleshed out later in the chapter through his daughters who grew up in the whole mess. They knew no different.
It’s super sad really. Compare Lot with Abraham - both blessed of God. Both with the choice to live in or apart from all the twisted-ness Sodom provided.
Keep your eyes on heaven. Store up your treasures there. Don’t play! Love you all! Dig in.
