Good Morning “Elementary Graduates.” Today we are in Hebrews 6.
The writer continues with his thought regarding milk and meat. Explaining further he says this: “Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,” Hebrews 6:1 NIV
He is not in any way suggesting we forget about Jesus, nor is he suggesting we stop confessing and repenting of our sins. What he is reinforcing is the idea that we move on from salvation to maturation. We build on the foundation - our salvation in Jesus. We move on from sin we have already repented of. The foundation is only the beginning base of the home - the rest is built upon it.
He changes his focus in the next passage to those who have heard the Gospel, been brought into the fold - so to speak. They have experienced the Holy Spirit moving and beaconing them into a relationship, understood the Word of God, clearly understanding what’s at stake and yet said no… not for me.
“It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.” Hebrews 6:4-6 NIV
Balaam was the man whose eyes were opened (Num. 24:3), and yet with his eyes opened he went down to utter darkness.
We will come across those who though they know, though they experience, are not willing to die to themselves, be humbly submitted, and dive in. It’s not an issue of understanding for them - yet they hold out. They will not accept Jesus. Their resistance seems to challenge the doctrine of irresistible grace - or were they never really called?
There is much more here to be digested. This is just a taste. Dive in! Love you all!
