Good Morning “Faithful Priests”. Today we are in 1 Samuel 2.
What does a passage about unholy priests have to do with us? As a backdrop let’s not forget 1 Peter 2:9-10 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.“
This chapter opens with Hannah praising The Lord for His faithfulness, rejoicing her son Samuel GETS to serve Him. It’s a privilege I believe we often forget. I think often Christians look at our calling to die to ourselves and offer our lives to the Lord, (Romans 12:1) as some great sacrifice as opposed to a great blessing. It’s in His Mercy and Grace that He saves us and offers us complete joy, even in this life. This complete joy only comes by obediently serving Him (John 15:11).
Hophni and Phinehas, Eli’s sons, basically did as they pleased instead of as God pleased. They took raw meat to roast from that which was offered, instead of receiving the boiled meat with the fat burned off, as was instituted by God. Furthermore they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the “Tent of Meeting” - both detestable acts! Obviously their whole attitude was messed up. Eli knew, and although he confronted them, allowed them to continue serving. His judgement is coming for lack of action with his sons - something for us to note as parents.
Contrast that with Hannah, blessed abundantly, and young Samuel, a boy humbly serving The Lord with his whole heart. God is about to act! Samuel will be raised up, Eli, his sons and his whole house judged! Check out James 4:1-10.
In a modern day church culture with no shortage of Hophni, Phinehas, and Elis… the world needs to see some Hannah’s and Samuel’s!
Love you all! Dig in!
