Good Morning “Mighty Warriors.” Today we are in Judges 6.
I’ve been looking forward to this story - I LOVE it!
Israel continues in their cycle. They Worship God, the current Judge dies, they rebel and worship false Gods, God oppresses them through those inhabitants they disobediently left in the land, then… after enough years of struggle they “finally” get it - and cry out to Him. He raises up another Judge to deliver them.
They are in one of those periods of struggle and oppression. ”The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.“ Judges 6:1 NIV
The Midianites were ruthless. When Israel would plant crops, they would come in and destroy them all. In the midst of this, Gideon who is the weakest of his clan, is threshing wheat in a winepress - hiding from his oppressors. They knew the history of Israel, so Gideon among others had to be thinking - God please do something! Raise up a Judge to deliver us. Maybe they could run an add in n some internet employment site. “Wanted a warrior to deliver us. Those who hide in winepresses need not apply.”
God is all about defeating enemies and winning battles with the most unlikely of candidates. We just saw that with Deborah, Jael and the 10,000 volunteers. They didn’t have a single real war weapon among them. Shouldn’t be a surprise - we’ve seen this before.
Check out how “The Angel of the Lord” (Jesus) appears to Gideon.
“…The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” Judges 6:12 NIV
Mighty what? Mighty hider in the winepress? God sees past who we are alone and is able to see who we could be with just a little faith in Him!
Gideon doesn’t buy it! He cannot believe he is the solution, and moves to testing God. God humors him. As we’ll continue to read tomorrow, Gideon ultimately has to exercise faith. He isn’t given all of the information. How in the world God is going to give them victory with the less than traditional battle weapons God chooses. Gideon is about to realize what a little faith can do. Battle methods don’t matter when it’s God battling through you!
Dig in “Mighty Warriors”! Love you all!
