Good Morning “Recipients of Mercy and Grace.” Today we are in Deuteronomy 25.
Today’s chapter gives clear example of 3 principle actions we should be aware of. Gods justice, mercy and grace. Let’s be clear on the meanings of these words.
Justice is the warranted execution of the law. It respects no person and is purely an advocate of the law’s standard. When an alleged infraction arises, Justice is executed solely on facts, weighed against the letter of the law. In God’s hands, “Justice” is His exact and complete administration of the consequences required by a sinner’s breaking His Law & violating His Holiness! The Bible says of God:
“...He does not leave the guilty unpunished...” (Exodus 34:7).
Mercy is when the guilty party does not get what they deserve. Receipt of mercy, given by the one sinned against, is the choice to bear the consequence of the sin, alone; rather than demand that the sinner pay it themselves. While guilt remains, the consequences for guilt are lessened or removed through Mercy. The Bible speaks of God’s great mercy, ”But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions…”
Ephesians 2:4-5 NIV
We all have all sinned and fallen short (Romans 3:23), we were DEAD in our trespasses, “The wages of sin is death”, eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23). God, because of His great mercy gave us an alternative, through the blood of Jesus, (His sacrifice and payment on The Cross), NOT to incur the penalty we deserve.
Grace is receiving something we in no way earned. We in no way deserve salvation through Jesus. We in no way have earned anything. It’s 100% a gift of Gods Grace. ”… it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.“
Ephesians 2:5-9 NIV
”… Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.“ Ephesians 2:3b NIV
Justice requires death for sin, physical and spiritual, hence our default destination is Hell. We’re already on our way, God need not send us there, we’re already going. In His mercy He provided an alternative - eternal life in heaven. By His Grace He gave us the gift of Salvation through Jesus!
Do you know that you know that you know… where you will spend eternity? It comes down to you humbly opening your heart and receiving Jesus payment for your sin (Romans 10:9). True belief always results in action. That action, demonstrating your belief in God, His justice, and the Mercy and Grace He’s given instead - naturally should be repentance (Turning away from sin). By the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us from the time of salvation, He does the work from the inside out. (Romans 8:1-17, Philippians 1:6).
