Good Morning “Obeyers of All that God Has Commanded.” Today we are in Deuteronomy 24.
Within the nation of Israel the Levite Priests served as both Religious Leaders and the government / judges of the people. Moses as Gods Servant / Prophet - Spokesperson was the immediate carrier of His Word to the nation.
As we read this chapter containing more Law reminders, one passage sticks out. ”… be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical priests instruct you. You must follow carefully what I have commanded them. Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.“
Deuteronomy 24:8b-9 NIV
“Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam…”. That statement gives us a clue as to the intent of the chapter and refers to Numbers 12:1-10. Aaron and Miriam both began to question their younger brother Moses’ leadership. Aaron would have been the Patriarch of the family and Miriam literally watched Moses float down the Nile in the basket, then facilitated his surrogate care by his own mother. They both no doubt had been caring for Moses for years. Now they find themselves taking orders from him and they’ve begun to question. Surely they thought, God could speak through us also. Questioning Moses meant questioning God - and His chosen method.
Our application is still the same today. He chooses and establishes His “Servant Leaders” within The Body. They have the responsibility of holding us accountable, shepherding and overseeing the Body, protecting the flock of God from attack — from enemies both within and from outside the Body, and they are charged with teaching The Word of God to us all. Why? So that we might all grow up in Christ, so that we can do the work of the ministry. (Ephesians 4:11-16; II Timothy 2:2; see also Acts 6:1-7; 20: 17-31a; I Peter 5:1-4) When we sin by rebelling against, slandering or questioning Gods leadership institution without Biblical cause… look out! God doesn’t play. (I Timothy 5:17-18; Hebrews 13:17)
