Good Morning “Never Forgetters.” Today we are in Deuteronomy 16.
God through Moses gives Israel a rundown of reminders. Have you ever wondered why so many reminders? Why did the Israelites need to keep these annual feasts and go through these ceremonies?
There is purpose in everything God asks, these ceremonies and festivals are no different. We talked about these more in depth back in Numbers 28-29. This is a new generation of Israel so reinforcing these requirements is necessary. Furthermore God knows people easily forget when not reminded.
Consider Moses’ continual warnings against idolatry. Nearly every chapter of Deuteronomy, including chapter 16 gives warning. It evidently didn’t stick. It wasn’t long before the Israelites started worshiping idols and Asherah (Judges 3:7).
The application is the same for us. We cannot let ourselves get lax. Consider the Lord’s Supper. We dare not come to communion lacking seriousness. Remembering His Body broken for us, His Blood shed for forgiveness of our sins must never be forgotten or taken for granted.
When we forget the lessons of the past we are destined to repeat the same sins. “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9
