Good Morning “Unintentional Sinners.” Today we are in Numbers 15.
God is Love! Apart from God there is no Love! (1 John 4:8) God is also Holy, Righteous. His Love is perfect in every way, meaning He is just, He must correct and discipline His children - those He loves! (Hebrews 12:4-12)
His Holiness requires He deal with sin appropriately. Sin must be atoned for. He gave the nation of Israel the Sacrificial System as a means of demonstrating their faith, and temporarily atoning for or covering their sin. However “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sin.” (Hebrews 10:4) Jesus, fully God, and fully man, Holy and perfect in every way was / is the only sacrifice sufficient to take away sin once for all. Praise The Lord we live in the time after Jesus and have the opportunity to receive His payment for our sin.
We dare not forget, however; that God is unchanging. His Holiness has not changed. I would be shrinking back from the whole counsel of God, (Acts 20:27) if I did not point out that the Sacrificial System given to Israel was for “unintentional” sin. This chapter makes that Truth abundantly clear. So what of willful, “intentional” sin?
““But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or foreigner, blasphemes the Lord and must be cut off from the people of Israel. Because they have despised the Lord’s word and broken his commands, they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.’ ” Numbers 15:30-31 NIV
God refers to intentional sin as defiant sin. In other words we know the expectation and yet defy it. It speaks to rebellion and for it there was no atonement. Please understand I am not saying that Jesus payment was insufficient to pay for intentional sin. In fact He paid for all sin (1 John 2:1-2). But what I’m attempting to point out is the expectation is quite greater than we acknowledge in our world today. Intentional, “defiant” sin should not be a thing.
“In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” Hebrews 12:4 NIV
There’s the EXPECTATION! It seems we are to resist even to the point of shedding blood. Sin abounds in our world, no doubt! It’s everywhere. The world shrugs their shoulders at it. Do we? “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Hebrews 10:31 NASB1995
