Good Morning “Those With a Tune Stuck in Your Heads.” Today we are in 1 Chronicles 25.
“David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.” 1 Chronicles 25:1 NIV
This first verse sets up the whole chapter. What is David doing exactly? Why does he commission army commanders to help him? Is he selecting some to tell the future set to music? What’s happening here?
First of all, we are in a battle! A spiritual battle! So were they - big time. So it’s understandable that the commanders of David’s army were tapped to help him select warriors to do battle.
Their weapons: instruments and prophesy, ummm ok… maybe instruments, I could swing a Lyre like a club if I had to… but prophesy? Wait what? What does that mean exactly in this context? Are they bringing a Word from The Lord in the midst of their worship? YES… but not how we might think. The Word of God IS our only offensive battle weapon against the evil one (Ephesians 6:10-18). In this case their prophesying involved NOT necessarily bringing, or foretelling a NEW future revelation from The Lord, but forth telling from The Word The Lord had given. Someone with the gift of prophesy has the ability to take The Word of God, apply it to the situation and share it with others.
Simply put their Worship was to include The Word of God as they Praise Him. In this way The Word of God is reinforced effectively when attached to music. Worship ought to be Biblical. Worship is yet another way for us to keep Scripture at the forefront of our thinking (Joshua 1:8-9). “I got that tune stuck in my head.” “Hope it’s a Biblical one”.
The focus of their worship was to remain on God… so should ours. Some modern contemporary worship music has taken a turn to elevating man, minimizing God, focusing on us… instead of focusing on Him. Beware! It’s why I believe David made sure The Word of God was being sung.
Love you all! Dig in!
