Good Morning “Detail Catchers.” Today we are in 1 Chronicles 20.
This chapter is short. Just 8 verses Chronicling David… really Joab’s taking Rabbah, and some of Israel’s battle with the Philistines. Were even reminded of their victory against 3 giants… one with 6 fingers and 6 toes on each - 24 in all. I gotta think that dude had an incredible grip on his sword and quite the balance to go with it.
Ok Bible scholars… what’s missing from this story? Let me give you a hint…
“In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war…
…David remained in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and left it in ruins.” 1 Chronicles 20:1 NIV
Perhaps a look back at 2 Samuel 11:1-
It’s missing the entire story of David and Bathsheba. Opponents of The Word of God / The Bible, will often point out missing pieces as discrepancies. They’ll argue that because all the same events are not included in the different accounts… well then, they must not be true. Hang on hang on!
The Bible was inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17) through authors who were still allowed their own voice and or perspective. We see this in their different manner of writing. Peter describes the process as he refers to Prophets.
“For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21 NIV
While antagonists of Scripture are quick to point out differences in Scripture and call them errors or discrepancies, they ignore the very same realities found in secular writings and curriculums - without ever considering why. Consider the vast number of discrepancies with the theory of evolution for instance.
Scripture is simply testimony from those who lived it. In any court case, eye witness testimony always varies from witness to witness. Depending on your background, focus, character you would remember and speak of things different than I would. Not wrong… just different. It’s actually one of the ways they determine truth. This is vastly different than the large gap, missing pieces found with many of today’s modern movements or ideas. ITS NOT THE SAME THING.
We must train ourselves to notice the difference and be Berean’s (Acts 17:11) in ALL areas. As Christians we ought to be the most informed, best educated ones in the room. So… notice the gaps and differences - but STUDY to know why.
Love you all! Dig in!
