1 Chronicles 8

Good Morning “Imitators of The One True King.”  Today we are in 1 Chronicles 8.

As we read today’s genealogy we see where Saul came from.  His son Jonathan is of course mentioned.  This genealogy sets the scene for 1 Chronicles 10, which picks up at the very end of Saul’s reign.

But first, let’s revisit how Israel ended up with Saul as King in the first place.  God was to be their worthy all sufficient King.  He is both… “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In their wavering relationship with Him Israel wanted more.  “…the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us.  Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1 Samuel 8:19-20

Today every country has their leaders.  Some with different titles or positions depending on the countries form of government.  For instance the Queen of England, or the President of the US.  Isn’t it interesting how much trust, confidence and reliance is placed in and on them, while discounting The One who REALLY holds it all?  1st application for us.

As I read Saul’s genealogy my study lead me to Jonathan.  We all have an area of influence.  If you are a parent, grandparent, brother, sister, child, friend, boss, employee… etc etc you have an area of influence.  Our lives SHOULD point people to The Father (Matthew 5:16).  The fruit of our choices should be a blessing to those around us - especially those closest to us.  For me, I think categorically: My wife, kids, grand kids, other family, students, church family etc,

The way we live can either springboard, bolster, strengthen someone’s faith… or hinder, derail, discourage it.  The consequences that follow our choices can either be beneficial to those we love or detrimental.  Why am I on this today?

By all Biblical accounts Jonathan was an honorable young man who loved The Lord with seemingly much potential. Saul’s rebellion against God brought judgement, destruction and ruin - even to Jonathan and his household.  Remember Jonathan was killed alongside his father Saul on Mount Gilboa during a battle with the Philistines.

Who we trust, where we find peace, comfort, protection, provision matters.  It matters because it speaks to who we serve.  Who we serve instructs how we live, and how we live affects everyone around us.  It matters!  We can’t just shrug it off.

“So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭14‬:‭12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We cannot be the “bad company” that corrupts… (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Love you all!  Dig in!
