2 Kings 18

Good Morning “Fearless of Man, Faithful to God.”  Today we are in 2 Kings 18.

Hezekiah is on the scene!  There’s a new sheriff in town… or rather king - of Judah to be exact!  None like him since David!  He did what was right in the eyes of The Lord, even removing the “high places”, cutting down the Asherah Poles, smashing their sacred stones and other elements of false idol worship.  In short, he cleaned house!  He trusted in The Lord and served Him whole heartedly.

“And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.” 2 Kings‬ ‭18‬:‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

However; he was not perfect!  None of us are.  In his 14th year the King of Assyria attacks and captures the fortified cities of Judah and captures them.  God remains silent.  In fear, Hezekiah who formerly stood against the King, waivers.  In a moment of weakness he strips gold from the temple and gives it to the king in an effort to buy him off.

Why would God remain silent when Hezekiah needed Him most?  If you read on through the message from the king of Assyria, delivered to Judah at the edge of the city - you will see that Assyria’s view of the One True God was distorted (2 Kings 18:19-25). He even mocks Hezekiah’s destruction of the “high places”, demonstrating their corrupted belief system.  “But if you say to me, “We are depending on the Lord our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem”?” 2 Kings‬ ‭18‬:‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Where did they get this twisted view of acceptable worship of The One True God?  Answer - From the messed up Israelite priests from Samaria (2 Kings 17:24-29).

Gods silence with Hezekiah has produced an opportunity.  With the army of Assyria knocking at the door, Hezekiah can either publicly cower… or demonstrate faith in the One True God and set the record straight!  Will God speak?  How will Hezekiah respond?  You’ll have to stick with us and keep reading.

The real question is, “When your faith is really tested… in the face of attack, struggle, or adversity how will or do you respond?  The testing of our faith is essential if we’re going to grow up! (James 1:2-4)   Gods not being mean when He’s silent.  He may be calling us to step up.

Love you all!  Dig in!
