Good Morning “Rejectors of Counterfeit gods.” Today we are in 1 Kings 12.
So much happens in this chapter. Solomon is dead. Rehoboam is king. Remember Gods declaration to Solomon? Because he worshiped the false gods of his wives, God would rip apart the kingdom and give all but one tribe, Benjamin - to Jeroboam. Why not all the tribes? God made a promise to David, furthermore the line of Jesus must be protected.
God pronounced His judgment, but how would He accomplish it? We see how here. All he’s got to work with on earth is sinful man… so, that’s what He does here. Rehoboam is presented a complaint. Solomon worked the people hard… the yoke is heavy, they would like the load lightened. He starts out seeking advice from the elders, the wise counsel his father used. If the wisest man that ever lived sought counsel from these guys - it might be a good idea to listen. Nope - instead he seeks advice from his friends, takes their advice, and increases the workload. Check it out. You can’t make this stuff up.
Well, they all rebel, sell out to Jeroboam, and begin serving him. All but Benjamin follow Jeroboam. Furthermore Jeroboam sets up a false worship system for Israel, similar in basic structure to The One True God’s system but NOT! The people all bite, and begin to worship Jeroboams false gods. Once again Israel is divided, and sunk.
The evil one isn’t creative. He does the very same thing every day, offering us alternative gods to worship. Our pride and our flesh are at the top, as it was with Rehoboam. God gives us the tools we need to succeed, He surrounds us with those who speak wisdom. He’s given us His Son and commanded us in proper worship. What more do we need?
Love you all! Dig in!
