Good Morning “Evenly Yoked.” Today we are in 1 Kings 11.
In today’s chapter we see a principle of Scripture reiterated in The New Testament. Other than the shear number of wives and Solomon’s struggle in that way - there was another problem.
“They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.” 1 Kings 11:2 NIV
Solomon had MANY Pagan wives who worshiped false gods. God was very clear as to why He wanted Israel to marry only Israelites - the others were NOT followers of God, so they would turn Israel’s hearts. Solomon married Pagan wives and they did indeed turn his heart. Solomon did exactly as The Lord said he would, and began worshiping their gods. As a result God would pronounce judgment on Solomon. His kingdom would be torn apart, and God raised up men to do it.
This is where we get the principle that Followers of Jesus should marry Followers of Jesus. Missionary dating doesn’t work! “But Pastor Jason… I’ve seen it work.” Mmmm, disobeying God doesn’t work. We may get away with disobedience for a season, and sometimes — in repentance — we experience His Grace; but disobeying Him never “works!”
Scripture is clear:
“Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.””
1 Corinthians 15:33 NASB1995
“Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?”
2 Corinthians 6:14 NASB1995
Although this passage is largely speaking in relation to marriage the argument could also be made for business relationships as well as our closest friendships. Scripture warns us that we will be corrupted. Additionally consider this, if God decides to bring them to their knees, and we’re yoked with them… guess what?
None of that is to say we don’t still purpose to reach the lost with The Love of Jesus. What it means is we are careful who we allow to be closest to us.
Love you all! Dig in!
