Good Morning “Those who know The Shepherd.” Today we are in 2 Samuel 17.
God is about to act. Remember 2 Samuel 16:12 “It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore me this day.” David never quit trusting in The Lord - but remained faithful to shepherd those that were with him. Out of love for the sheep, David became a warrior. David was always a shepherd - a picture of Jesus.
Absalom however seemingly wanted to be seen as a powerful conqueror but never loved as a shepherd. Remember his words at the gate, in 2 Sam 15:4: After suggesting David had no time for the people he continues, “If only I were appointed judge of the land…” he he went on to explain, I would bring resolution to all your problems. However; there is no record of him ever hearing a single case.
David knew Absalom had grown to trust his advisors so… he prays.
“Now David had been told, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.” 2 Samuel 15:31 NIV
And… in this chapter we see Gods answer - which triggered Absaloms demise.
“Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring calamity on Absalom.”
2 Samuel 17:14 NASB1995
You see Hushaj was a true friend of David’s. He went and remained with Absalom to work from the inside out for David’s sake. Absalom was a poser. David was the real deal. These chapters remind me of Jesus Words…
“Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” John 10:1-5 NIV
Jesus goes on to explain that He is the good shepherd that lays down His life for the sheep.
Do you know His voice? Are you one of His sheep? Following anyone or anything other than Jesus, “The Good Shepherd doesn’t end well.”
Love you all! Dig in!
