Good Morning “Doers of What’s Right.” Today we are in 2 Samuel 14.
As we’ve said, the immediate consequence of sin is typically more sin. The ripple effect of our sin extends further than we could ever imagine. David didn’t execute justice when Amnon raped his half sister Tamar. This allowed Absalom her full brother to burn with anger and desire for revenge. Eventually Absalom lies, plots and gets Amnon right where he wants him, and carries out the premeditated murder of Amnon - through others we his father David did. Interesting isn’t it?
Absalom’s now on the lam. He flees knowing the penalty for murder is death. David lets him be. Now enter Joab the kings commander. He knew the kings heart longed of Absalom so he gets to work. He reasons a pardon and restoration are in order.
Pay attention here, remember there is no exception given in the law simply because the murderer is the kings son. Furthermore we see Joab acting to help bring about what he assumes must happen with no regard to the Plan of God. Should David grant mercy here? Mercy exists because the rule is justice, but when justice no longer exists mercy is just a license to sin. We will see that fleshed out with more “ripple effects” of sin in Absalom - as we read on.
Joab plots, and hires an actress who tells a little bait and switch story to get David to ultimately agree to pardon Absalom - and the soap opera continues.
What are we to make of all this craziness. Man if nothing else, get a load of the principle that sin leads to more sin and the ripple affects are unending. Forgiveness from the Lord is NOT removal of discipline or consequences - those continue.
The moral of the story… just do what’s right! Love and live Biblically! It’s really much easier, less painful and has a positive instead of a negative effect on the people you love.
Love you all! Dig in!
