Good Morning “Those Who Respect and Honor Authority”. Today we are in 1 Samuel 24.
Get a load of David would you! He’s got Saul right where he wants him, dead where he stands - TAKE THE SHOT!!! Or rather RUN HIM THROUGH! How many of you were thinking that? Instead, David simply creeps up unnoticed and cuts off a corner of his robe. Later he’ll show it to Saul as evidence that he could have easily killed him.
Before he even does that, he is conscious stricken, “He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.”
1 Samuel 24:6-7 NIV
David understood the simple principle that God and God alone places Authorities in their position. We are charged to submit to and honor them even if we don’t like them. David didn’t have Romans 13 to tell him that like we do. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” Romans 13:1-2 NIV
It is important to point out that our SUPREME AUTHORITY is The Lord, and His Word! Our subjection to even the authorities God has instituted is limited in that way. Simply put - obey God first. If submitting to earthly authorities mean you compromise obedience to The Lord… OBEY THE LORD - at all costs. Same principal applies to the authorities in your life. Finish the sentence, “Respect is _____________. You wanted to say earned didn’t you. Biblically it’s commanded - for authorities, for each other, for yourself!
Love you all! Dig in!
