1 Samuel 23

Good Morning “Those Who Seek Peace and Comfort in The Lord and His Word.”  Today we are in 1 Samuel 23.

Generally speaking… our comfort and “feelings” are on display more now, in this age, than ever.  As a society we seem to have become a people who are “offended” at everything and believe we have a right to be.  We are more “sensitive” than ever.  Perhaps these feelings are exaggerated because we are not really receiving the kind of affirmation and encouragement we need.  Could it be that as we seek comfort, peace, and encouragement through each other, through human means - we are all coming up short?  Could it be that you accepting “my truth”, and encouraging me in it, is really no help at all?

I don’t want to minimize the power  of human encouragement for truly Hebrews 10:24 urges us to encourage one another.  However; understand that encouragement should simply be an extension of Gods hand - His encouragement using His Word!  Anything short of that is simply empty words… it doesn’t work, thus we do not have peace, we are not comforted or encouraged.  Instead, aren’t we left still living lives of doubt, insecurity and anxiousness?

Check out David in this chapter - No recording of him freaking out.  As he runs for his life, he actively and carefully considers Gods leading.  All the while he is still being obedient, still taking care of the business at hand - waging war against evil and protecting those that are weaker.  Jonathan finds him - obviously directed by the Lord as Saul hasn’t been successful locating him.  Jonathan offers encouragement, using Gods plan and David’s future as encouragement that he’s not going to be killed.

I’m sure his words were comforting, but other than mention of the two of them making a covenant, Scripture does not focus on Jonathan’s encouragement.  Instead, David simply gets back to business, trusting and following The Lord.

In a world where largely each one does what is right in their own eyes, where we purpose to do it all on our own, have we also forgotten where to find true encouragement and comfort?  (Philippians 4:6-7).   Be encouraged, be comforted with the Only Way that’s truly effective.  (John 14:6)

Love you all!  Dig in!
