1 Samuel 20

Good Morning “Friends”.  Today we are in 1 Samuel 20.

How many friends do you have?  I’m not talking about the 600+ Facebook Friends or 1000 Instagram followers.  I’m talking about “Real” friends, ones you can count on, ones that get what a covenant friendship really looks like.

What is a covenant friendship?  What is a covenant?  A covenant is a unilateral agreement between two parties and God.  A covenant says I will do my part even if you don’t do yours; and I ask God to hold me accountable should I not.  Marriage is a covenant, not a contract.  We have a covenant relationship with Jesus.  He did and does His part, even though often we don’t.  (Romans 5:8)

The one who has many friends is often envied.  “They are so popular.”  But stop and think… are any of those friends real?  For whatever reason; success, wealth, good looks - some just naturally draw a crowd.  We want to be near extraordinary.   I can tell you from those I have known in that position… they are often the loneliest of all.  Real friendships are forged through the trials of life… like we see in this chapter.

We should seek to build real, true, lasting friendships rather than many.  “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”  Proverbs 18:24 ESV

We should seek to be a “REAL” friend and to build friendships that are modeled after our relationship with Jesus.  Even more than that, we should seek to build our relationship with Him, Who has promised He will NEVER leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).  “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John‬ ‭15‬:‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Popularity is not all it’s cracked up to be.  Love you all!  Dig in!
