1 Samuel 19

Good Morning “Rejoicing with Those Who Rejoice.”  Today we are in 1 Samuel 19.

When you witness someone’s victory or success what is your hearts immediate response?  Do you rejoice with them, or do you think why them and not me?  One response is of The Lord, one of selfish flesh.

David hasn’t done anything wrong!  In fact, his efforts really have benefited Saul as well.  Saul however is too busy lamenting that David is getting credit.  Remember the last chapter - “As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”” 1 Samuel‬ ‭18‬:‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly….”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭18‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As we read 19 we see more plotting, more broken promises.  This time he promises his son Jonathan that he won’t kill David… yet that’s exactly what he’s after.

Saul doesn’t get it.  The very thing that has caused God to remove His hand from Saul is Saul’s messed up attitude.  Furthermore we can assume Saul’s worship of idols rubbed off on his daughter - David’s wife Michal.  There was at least one idol in David’s house.  We see it here as she tries to fool Saul’s men as they come to kill David.

I think there is a part of us all, at least a small part that wants to be the one recognized.  We desire affirmation.  When that desire begins to corrupt our heart and dictate our actions we have a problem.  In Luke 10:20 when the Disciples are rejoicing because they have power over demons - Jesus reminds them don’t rejoice because the spirits submit to you - rejoice your names are written in heaven.  Our security, our self esteem should come from the fact that the God of all Creation saved us by the blood of Jesus!

Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

Also check: Psalm 138:6, Proverbs 3:34, Proverbs 29:23, Matthew 23:12, Luke 1:52.

Humbly let God exalt you… then you don’t have to worry about exalting yourself.

Love you all!  Dig in!
