Good Morning “Saved by The Christ.” Today we are in 1 Samuel 10.
”Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?“
1 Samuel 10:1 NIV
Samuel anointed Saul as ruler… it was really more than that though! We’re about to dive into a little Bible language lesson here. It’s cool, trust me. We see a very interesting correlation between “anointed” here, and The Christ which literally means the “anointed one”. Christ is not Jesus last name, it’s a a title that has its origin, in Hebrew.
The word מָשחַ (Mašíaḥ, messiah) in Hebrew meant “anointed [one]” (A Greek English Lexicon). Several men in Jewish history were described using this term. It was used to refer to anointed priests (Lev 4:3) and David used it when describing Saul (1 Sam 26:9).
When the Old Testament scriptures were translated into Greek, the term מָשחַ (Mašíaḥ, messiah) was translated using the word χριστός (chrīstós), meaning "anointed one”. χριστός is derived from the Greek verb χρίω (chrī́ō), meaning "to anoint”. When the Bible was translated from Greek to English, χριστός (chrīstós) became Christ.
Throughout Scripture “The Anointed” was a term used of certain individuals that God chose to fill certain roles which would serve to redeem the nation. It’s important to note that although they were “anointed” to serve The Lord, there is only One “Anointed One” - Jesus. They / we are but a foreshadowing, a glimpse of the One Christ - and then, only because of the power of the Holy Spirit.
We like the kings of the day are called to fill a specific role in Gods plan (2 Corinthians 1:21). We are anointed by the Holy Spirit, empowered to point a broken and lost nation to Jesus. This term “Anointed”, then “Messiah” became one that the nation of Israel would come to find hope in. They came to understand that the one who bore the title “The anointed”, “Messiah” or “The Christ” would come to deliver them and redeem them. Hence they began to anxiously await The Messiah - The Christ! We no longer need to anxiously await…
He is risen! The battle is over! Redemption has come! Receive Him and claim it! Then… proclaim it! It’s GOOD news!
Love you all! Dig in.
