Good Morning “Receivers of The Savior.” Today we are in Genesis 37 the beginning of the story of Joseph and that colorful coat. This chapter is jamb packed with parallels and pictures of Jesus. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you study.
- God takes our evil sinful hearts and uses them to accomplish His good will. We’ve seen that all through Genesis - it continues here.
- Joseph is a picture of Jesus. Although not in order, more than 100 parallels between Jesus and Joseph exist in his story. What we see God doing on behalf of Israel through Joseph, parallels what God does with Israel throughout history - especially in the last days of Tribulation.
- We will also see how God moves the seed promise toward Christ in the family of Judah and Joseph.
Joseph is the 11th son of Jacob, only Benjamin is younger. He’s a long way from the birthright and yet he is obviously the favorite. Since the firstborn son of Leah (Rueben) disqualified himself, Jacob is assigning the birthright to Joseph, Rachael’s first son. Jacob’s flaw in the way he treated Joseph compared to the others, comes back to haunt the family here. Vs 3 tells us that Joseph was favored because he was a “son of his old age.” The phrase in Hebrew literally translates “wise son” and actually doesn’t have anything to do with him being born when Jacob was old. Joseph was wise - there’s more to him being the favorite than the fact he was Rachael’s son.
What about this coat of many colors. The coat represented Jacob’s authority. With the coat, Jacob is placing authority over all the sons - on Joseph. No wonder they hated him. Furthermore Jacob puts Joseph in the position of reporting on his brothers. Joseph only does what he’s told, but his brothers likely see him a tattletale.
Joseph’s dreams serve to incense the brothers and even anger Jacob. They will bow to him. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord.”
The brothers are said to be in Shechem - a picture of the sinful world. Joseph is sent there to get his brothers. Picture Christ sent to earth to rescue us. “Jesus came to His own but His own did not receive Him.” They strip Joseph of his authority and toss him in a pit nearly naked. Then later, they sell him into slavery.
As you read or re-read the story see how many more parallels you can find. I’d love to hear about them. Love you all! Dig in!
