Ezekiel 40

Good Morning “Eager Anticipators”.  Today we are in Ezekiel 40.

This chapter begins very detailed prophecy that will continue over the next several chapters - regarding a future temple.  Ezekiel is taken by the Lord to a very high mountain to observe and pay close attention to the prophecy he is given.  We’re not told the name of the mountain but it seems he can see Jerusalem which would indicate it’s likely Mount Moriah - the location of Solomon’s Temple (2 Chronicles 3:1).

Once again many views of this prophecy exist.  Is it figurative or literal?  Is it a real temple or simply an allegory pointing to Jesus?  Or… is it like many prophecy’s both, with near future term and eternal implications?  When will this Temple be built and worship in It resume?

Of the hand full of views I’ve studied it seems most likely this is the Millennial Temple.  Ezekiel isn’t the only prophet who said there would be a holy temple during the Kingdom Age (Isaiah 2:1–5, 60:7, Jeremiah 33:18, Joel 3:18, Micah 4:2, Haggai 2:7–9, Zechariah 6:12–15, 14:16, 20–21).

Critics of this view struggle with the description of the sacrificial rooms here - preparation for the offering of routine sacrifices.  Why would there be sacrifices in the Millennial Kingdom, with Jesus there, in the flesh… The Only REAL Sacrifice that could take away sin (Hebrews 10:1-11).

It’s not unreasonable to think that sacrifices could continue to be offered as “memorials”, much like we take Communion today.  The Lords Supper in no way adds to what Jesus did on the cross but simply causes us to remember.  Even Jesus said He would observe The Lords Supper in the age to come (Luke 22:18).

Either way, understand this prophecy comes 25 years into Judahs exile in Babylon.  I mean think about that… you’re 25 when taken into exile… you’re now 50!  Talk about losing hope.  The Temple represented their intimate communion with God.  It’s where they went to meet with Him.  They no doubt by this point longed in eager anticipation for that intimacy once more.  This prophecy would serve to encourage, the details renewing that hope in them - much like a young couple stepping out the dimensions of their future home on vacant land.

Jesus is coming!  This day is coming!  Do you long, in eager anticipation for the day we will be  face to face with Him?  We ought to… (Roman’s 8:19, Philippians 1:21, 3:20).

Love you all!  Dig in!
