Good Morning “Those who do everything in the name of the Lord.” Today we’re in Colossians 3.
Here Paul compares and contrasts the way we once were before Christ, with how we should be in Christ. In Christ our old self is dead. We once lived according to our earthly nature, but should now put to death sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.” Colossians 3:5, 8 NIV
He goes on to remind us not to lie to each other. We are all one. No longer Jew or Gentile, etc.
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Colossians 3:12-14 NIV
Summing all of these charges up, in a nutshell, live in a way that glorifies God.
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 NIV
He closes by giving a charge to those enslaved at the time, regarding their work - with something we can all apply. If they can do their work unto the Lord, then we who are paid to do a job ought to be able to as well.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 3:23-24 NIV
Someone once told me that if you get paid $20, you give them $20 worth of work. I think that thinking is quite common. Remember Jesus turned everything on its head. The application here is that we are working for the Lord not man. Work as though you are working for Him, under paid, over paid - not paid… doesn’t matter. It’s Him we either glorify or dishonor.
I often tell our students, it’s the way I raised my own kids as well… in your home, the classroom, on the field, the gym, the stage, or at your job. You may not be the most talented, or the brightest, but you better be the hardest working. It’s for Him you work.
Love you all! Dig in! Look like Him!
