Good Morning “Turners not Re-Turners”. Today we conclude Jeremiah with Chapter 52.
Its not over until it’s over. Although this chapter summarizes and retells the story of Jerusalem’s destruction and Judahs judgment as prophesied (Jeremiah 39, 2 Kings 24:18 – 25:30) - the story doesn’t end there.
As we read, it ought to arrest us, grab us, take us back. The images created are horrifying. The suffering unimaginable. This is what sin produces.
Jerusalem is destroyed, the Temple burned to the ground - its once Holy elements taken as spoils. The small number of those who remained and were taken into captivity or left alive indicates the extent of the slaughter.
As Jeremiah prophesied, only a “remnant” of the nation remained. Don’t miss the end. As the retelling of the story concludes we are left with a glimmer of hope. There is, as I said, and we know through additional prophecy - more to the story.
Through the remnant, the nation was to be preserved, renewed, and restored. After 37 years of captivity, Jehoiachin was brought out of prison, given royal honors, and seated at the table with the ruler of Babylon. Likewise, after years of discipline and suffering, the people of God were to be delivered, restored, and given the high privilege of becoming the nation in which the Savior of the World, Jesus, was to appear. He is The Way The Truth and The Life (John 14:6).
Oh that we might never have to “return” to Him but simply turn and remain! Oh that we could recognize the incredible Grace of God, without having to experience the depth of The Fathers discipline.
As our kids grew up and required discipline, we came to an unexpected conclusion. Their hearts were always softest, they were always most lovey, most cuddly - after the spanking. Why must we disobey, rebel, and reject Gods Word and His Way to discover the depth of His Love, Mercy and Grace? Why can’t we simply remain in Him and obey to begin with?
WE CAN (Romans 6)!
Love you all! Dig in!
