Good Morning “Fully Obedient”. Today we are in Genesis 35.
Last chapter we learned of Simeon and Levi’s retaliation against the men of Shechem as a result of Shechem himself raping their sister Dinah. Although their hearts to honor and protect their sister were in the right place their actions were all wrong. They plundered the land and took all that remained. Thus alienating the nation of Israel. Although they are 2nd and 3rd in line for the birthright, this eliminated them from the possibility of receiving it and the associated blessing should the first son Reuben be eliminated. This is going to become essential to remember as we near the end of this chapter.
God instructs Jacob to leave the land. Go back to Bethel where God had appeared to him when Jacob was first fleeing from Esau - and build an alter there. You may remember as a part of the promise Jacob was told that God would bring him back there. Genesis 28:15. Until now Jacob has seemed unwilling to obey that piece. Isn’t it interesting how God uses the consequences of our sin to press us into obedience. Jacob is now quite willing, despite purchasing land in Shechem - to leave it.
It is here, that God now doesn’t just promise a blessing to come, but bestows the blessing upon Jacob. This may seem a subtle difference to us but it is quite significant. Now that Jacob has obediently returned, God bestows the blessing.
In this chapter we also see the death of Rebekah’s wet nurse Deborah who is now a part of Jacob’s clan. This fact quietly informs us that his mom Rebekah has also passed - the only reason Deborah would be with Jacob. Likely she passed while Jacob was away. Our choices always come with consequences. Rebekah’s scheming against Isaac and the subsequent need for Jacob to flee results in Rebekah never seeing her favorite son again.
There’s much more to note and apply in this chapter. Including why Rueben the first borne son and rightful recipient of the Birthright, Blessing, and Seed Line of the Savior, is disqualified. We already know the line of Jesus proceeds through Judah who is the 4th son. (Simeon and Levi were earlier disqualified by their plunder of Shechem)
God doesn’t bless disobedience. In fact He often withholds blessing until full obedience is demonstrated. He has the power to compel our obedience and He will use our sin and its consequences, if necessary.
Love you all! Dig in for yourselves.
